Essential to our farm philosophy is a deep and uncompromising commitment to the principles and best practises of animal welfare. A happy, natural life, and a peaceful end.
The farm has earned Animal Welfare Approved certification, by A Greener World, considered to be the most rigorous ‘high-welfare’ standards in North America. Our sheep and pigs are Animal Welfare Approved non–GMO Certified, which assures our customers that our livestock are fed in the healthiest possible way, excluding any bio-engineered or GMO ingredients.
“You are what you eat, eats.” - Dan Barber, chef
Our non GMO certification, only available to AWA approved farms, assures you that all the components in our animal feed, whether grown on the farm or purchased, exclude GMO and high risk GMO components. The AWA certifications assures you the animals are getting a healthy diet, but this goes one step further by ensuring our livestock are raised on a natural diet. We work with our veterinarian to regularly test our livestock to confirm they are not deficient on any vitamins or minerals. We also test our soil and water regularly.
Our flocks of sheep and sounders of pigs are an integral part of our farm philosophy, supporting a regenerative approach to agriculture, enhancing soil health, water, and air, and encouraging biodiversity. This is consistent with the rigorous standards of our regenerative certification. We are stewards of the land, working to leave our land in better condition than when we found it.
Maple Syrup
Maple Syrup is the first farming activity of the year and signals the beginning of spring. Family, friends, neighbours, and often the chefs we work with, gather in the sugar shack to catch up after the winter, share stories, and plan for the growing seasons ahead.
Garden
It started as our kitchen garden, growing flavourful heirloom vegetables and herbs we love to eat, grown in a way we are comfortable eating – without insecticides or herbicides. Using flowers to attract pollinators, and creating gardens separate from each other for crop rotation.
Engagement
Our purpose remains steadfast: as stewards of the land and contributing to changing the global dialogue on food. The farm facilitates engagement by offering a space for people to gather and learn about the remarkable food at Tamarack Farms.
